CORK awarded Silver for 2017 Clean Regattas

CORK was on board for the Sailors for the Sea Clean Regatta challenge.  Clean Regattas is a certification system that enables protection of local waters by using selected Best Practices and then awards Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum. CORK’s initial effort resulted in the award of a Silver Certificate.

Step one was to create a Green Team to choose which Best Practices to tackle and implement. Highlighting our efforts was the elimination of over 2200 single use water bottles through distribution of reusable bottles and the use of the Water Buggy refill station.  The Utilities Kingston Water Buggy is a mobile water distribution system that operates at community events.

Reusable bags were given to volunteers to use as lunch bags throughout the events. Other initiatives included reusable regatta signage and the use of perpetual trophies. We offered vegetarian alternatives as sustainable food options.

CORK promoted alternative transportation for events. City of Kingston transit passes were offered at an event rate.  Passes provided unlimited bus rides over a four day period, encouraging the use of public transportation. In addition, bicycling and carpooling were promoted.

Our 2018 goal is to achieve Gold Certificate status.   The CORK Green Team and all regatta participants will continue to work towards this shared goal of a Clean Regatta.
